Wellbeing
Feeling Happy, Safe, Supported and Ready to Flourish
At Winford Church of England Primary School, we believe that children's wellbeing is at the heart of successful learning.
We want every child to feel happy, safe, valued and included. We know that children learn best when they feel secure, have positive relationships and know that there are adults who care about them.
Our Christian vision, Together we Flourish, and our school values of Aspire, Belong and Care underpin our approach to supporting the wellbeing of our whole school community.
Our Approach to Wellbeing
At Winford, wellbeing is part of everyday school life.
We place great importance on building trusting relationships, developing children's confidence and creating an environment where everyone feels they belong.
Through our Jigsaw PSHE curriculum, collective worship, assemblies and everyday experiences, children learn about emotions, friendships, healthy relationships, resilience and looking after themselves and others.
We encourage children to talk about their feelings, recognise when they need help and develop strategies for managing challenges.
Above all, we want every child to know that there is always someone at Winford who will listen and help.
Supporting Emotional Wellbeing
We recognise that children have different emotional and social needs, and that these may change over time.
Our approach includes:
-
Zones of Regulation – Helping children recognise and understand their emotions and develop strategies to manage them.
-
Calm classroom spaces – Providing opportunities for children to regulate their emotions and feel ready to learn.
-
The Nurture Room, Snug and the Ark – Nurturing spaces where children can receive additional support when needed.
-
Targeted interventions – Supporting emotional regulation, confidence, friendships and social skills.
-
Outdoor and practical learning – Providing opportunities to develop resilience, independence and positive relationships through Forest Activities, gardening, cooking and creative experiences.
We believe in connection before correction, taking time to understand children's needs and responding with kindness, consistency and care.
Working with Specialist Services
Some children benefit from additional support beyond what is ordinarily available in the classroom.
We work with the Mental Health Support Team (MHST), which can provide support for children and families, alongside advice and guidance for school staff.
Where appropriate, we also work with other professionals and services to ensure children receive the support they need.
We recognise that difficulties with emotional wellbeing can sometimes affect children's attendance. We work sensitively with families to understand barriers and help children feel safe, connected and confident in school.
Wellbeing Through Play and Outdoor Learning
Our wonderful outdoor environment plays an important role in supporting children's wellbeing.
Through active playtimes, Forest Activities, gardening, sport and creative experiences, children have opportunities to develop friendships, enjoy being active, experience success and connect with nature.
We recognise that children flourish in different ways and aim to provide a wide range of experiences that help every child discover their strengths.
Working Together with Families
We believe that strong relationships between home and school are essential for supporting children's wellbeing.
If you have concerns about your child's emotional health, friendships, behaviour or happiness at school, please speak to their class teacher in the first instance.
Our SENCO, Ms Pauline Adams, and safeguarding team can also help families explore additional support where needed.
We are always happy to listen, offer guidance and work together to find the best way forward.
