Admissions

Winford Church of England Primary School is part of the Lighthouse Schools Partnership.  However, the admission of children to the school is still the responsibility of North Somerset Local Education Authority.

Prospective parents of children who would like to make an in-year application are very welcome to ring the school at any time to make an appointment with the Headteacher who will show them around the school and answer any questions they may have. A request is then made for a place to North Somerset who co-ordinate the admission.  You can contact them through their website or you can call the Admissions Team directly on 01275 884078 or email at admissions@n-somerset.gov.uk.

For parents of children who will be joining as part of a new September cohort, we usually offer an open day where tours are given, although if you cannot make these, we are still always very happy to offer a tour on an alternative day.  The school follows the local authority admissions procedure and application is made through the authority. The application usually needs to be with the authority by a specified date in October for admission in the following September.

When places have been allocated and communicated to parents in April, we welcome new parents and children into the school in the term prior to their admission.

We hold a meeting for parents in June when there is an opportunity for parents to discuss concerns and routine matters with the Headteacher and class teacher. Children are invited to visit the school on two mornings in the term preceding their admission, in line with our induction arrangements. They will spend time in class with their teacher. From September, children are in school on a part-time basis for the initial period after which they are full-time.

By law all children must start school in the term immediately following the one in which they become five.  North Somerset Council’s present policy on the age of admission allows children to be admitted in the September of the academic year (1st September to 31st August) in which they have their fifth birthday.  This ensures that all children have three full years of infant education.

Parents/Carers of all children starting at Winford C of E Primary School are required to supply their child's birth certificate prior to admission. If a child has had their name changed by deed poll, an original document must be seen and a copy kept securely within school.

Arrangements for Children with Disabilities

At Winford, we consider ourselves to be an inclusive school. Pupils with disabilities are actively encouraged to be involved in the full life of the school. The two storey building has been re-developed and incorporates design elements to ensure compliance with disabled access regulations including an internal lift to the second floor. The school provides disabled toilets and changing facilities. Teaching and support staff have a great depth of knowledge and experience to support disabled pupils and the curriculum is modified to meet particular needs.
