The 5 Ways to Wellbeing
Five Simple Ways to Help Us Feel Good and Flourish!
Looking after our mental health and wellbeing is just as important as looking after our physical health.
Just as we are encouraged to eat a variety of healthy foods and stay active, there are simple things we can do every day to help us feel happier, calmer and more connected to the people around us.
The Five Ways to Wellbeing are five everyday actions that can support our mental health and emotional wellbeing.
They are:
Connect • Be Active • Keep Learning • Give • Take Notice
At Winford, these five ideas fit beautifully with our Christian vision, Together we Flourish, and our school values of Aspire, Belong and Care.
Your Five Ways Challenge!
Can you try all five ways this week?
You don't need to do everything at once. Even small actions can make a positive difference.
| Five Ways | Your Challenge |
|---|---|
| Connect | Spend time with someone you care about. |
| Be Active | Find a fun way to move. |
| Keep Learning | Discover or try something new. |
| Give | Do something kind for someone else. |
| Take Notice | Stop and appreciate something around you. |
Why not challenge your family to join in too?
Remember – It's Okay Not to Feel Okay
The Five Ways to Wellbeing are helpful everyday habits, but they won't make difficult feelings disappear.
Everyone feels worried, sad, frustrated or overwhelmed sometimes.
If something is worrying you, please talk to a trusted adult.
At Winford, there are always adults who will listen and help you.
Parents and carers can find further advice and information on our Supporting Mental Health and Wellbeing and Advice, Support and Resources for Wellbeing pages.
1. Connect - spend time with other people
Good relationships help us feel happy, valued and included.
Spending time with people who care about us helps us feel supported and gives us a sense of belonging.
At Winford, we connect when we play with friends, work together, share our ideas and look out for one another.
Why not try...
-
Inviting someone to join your game.
-
Talking to someone you haven't spoken to today.
-
Sharing a story or book with someone.
-
Spending time playing or chatting with your family.
-
Asking someone how they are feeling and really listening.
Our Winford value: Belong
We all need friendship, kindness and a place where we feel we belong.
2. Be active - move your body
Moving our bodies can help us feel healthier, happier and more energised.
Being active doesn't have to mean playing a sport. There are lots of fun ways to move, and everyone can find something they enjoy.
At Winford, we enjoy active playtimes, PE, outdoor learning and exploring our school grounds.
Why not try...
-
Going for a walk or bike ride.
-
Dancing to your favourite song.
-
Playing an active game with friends.
-
Spending time playing outdoors.
-
Trying a new sport or physical activity.
Remember, being active looks different for everyone. Find something that works for you!
Our Winford value: Aspire
We challenge ourselves, try new things and celebrate what our bodies can do.
3. Keep learning - discover something new
Learning new things helps us grow in confidence and feel proud of our achievements.
Learning isn't just something we do in lessons. Every day gives us opportunities to discover, explore and develop new skills.
At Winford, we love learning through practical experiences, creativity, curiosity and trying new challenges.
Why not try...
-
Learning a new recipe or helping prepare a meal.
-
Trying a new hobby or activity.
-
Reading a book about something that interests you.
-
Learning a new game, song or skill.
-
Asking questions and discovering something new about the world.
You don't have to get everything right the first time. Making mistakes and trying again are important parts of learning.
Our Winford value: Aspire
We are curious, we keep trying and enjoy discovering what we can achieve.
4. Give - show kindness to others
Doing something kind for someone else can make both of you feel good.
Giving doesn't have to involve money or presents. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
At Winford, we encourage children to care for one another and make a positive contribution to our school community.
Why not try...
-
Giving someone a smile or a compliment.
-
Helping a friend who is finding something difficult.
-
Saying thank you to someone who has helped you.
-
Doing a helpful job at home without being asked.
-
Looking after our school environment or helping care for nature.
Sometimes the smallest act of kindness can brighten someone's day.
Our Winford value: Care
We look after one another and make our school a kinder, happier place.
5. Take notice - enjoy the world around you
Taking time to notice the little things can help us feel calmer and appreciate the world around us.
Life can sometimes feel busy. Slowing down and paying attention to what we can see, hear, feel and experience can help us enjoy the present moment.
At Winford, our outdoor spaces provide wonderful opportunities to notice nature, reflect and experience moments of awe and wonder.
Why not try...
-
Listening carefully to the birds singing.
-
Noticing the colours, shapes and patterns in nature.
-
Taking a few slow, gentle breaths.
-
Looking for something beautiful on your way to school.
-
Thinking about three things you are grateful for.
Taking notice is also an important part of our approach to spirituality, helping us experience awe, wonder, reflection and connection.
Our Winford values: Belong and Care
We take time to appreciate ourselves, other people and the wonderful world around us.
