Year 1- Squirrel Class

Growing in Confidence, Curiosity and Independence!

Welcome to Squirrel Class! Our class teacher is Miss Lawrence.

Year 1 is an exciting year as children build on their Reception experiences, develop new skills and grow in confidence as learners.

In Squirrel Class, we encourage children to be curious, ask questions, explore new ideas and enjoy the challenge of learning something new.

Our school values of Aspire, Belong and Care help us create a happy, supportive classroom where everyone feels valued and ready to learn.

Life in Squirrel Class

Every day brings new opportunities to learn, explore and have fun!

Children enjoy a mixture of practical activities, creative experiences, outdoor learning and more structured lessons as they make the transition from Reception into Key Stage 1.

We encourage children to become increasingly independent, develop friendships, work together and take pride in their achievements.

Our Learning

In Year 1, children continue to develop their reading, writing and mathematics skills while exploring a broad and exciting curriculum.

We place particular importance on developing confidence in phonics and early reading, helping children become enthusiastic and increasingly fluent readers.

You can find more information about the subjects we teach and the learning covered throughout the year on our Curriculum pages.

Supporting Learning at Home

There are lots of simple ways to help your child flourish:

  • Read together every day – Listen to your child read their school book and enjoy sharing other stories.

  • Practise phonics – Encourage your child to recognise sounds and blend them to read words.

  • Explore numbers – Practise counting, number bonds and simple calculations through games and everyday activities.

  • Encourage independence – Help your child take responsibility for their belongings and everyday routines.

  • Talk about learning – Ask questions, share ideas and celebrate new discoveries.

  • Celebrate effort – Encourage perseverance, confidence and a willingness to try.

Class Newsletters

Our class newsletters share what we are learning each term, important information and ideas for supporting your child at home. These will be shared on ClassDojo.

Keeping in Touch

We use ClassDojo to share regular updates, photographs of learning and class reminders.
