Year 5 - Badger Class

Growing in Confidence, Independence and Responsibility!

Welcome to Badger Class! Our teacher is Mrs Benzie.

Year 5 is an exciting year as children move into upper Key Stage 2, build on their learning and develop greater confidence, independence and responsibility. We have several performances, sports events and trips and visitors to look forward to throughout the year, as well as our school camp!

In Badger Class, we encourage children to be curious, aim high, embrace challenges and take pride in their achievements.

Our school values of Aspire, Belong and Care help us create a happy, supportive classroom where everyone feels valued and ready to learn.

Life in Badger Class

Every day brings new opportunities to learn, explore and have fun!

Children enjoy practical activities, creative experiences, outdoor learning and opportunities to develop their independence and leadership skills.

We encourage children to build positive friendships, develop resilience, work collaboratively and take increasing responsibility for their learning and behaviour.

As some of our oldest pupils, Year 5 children are encouraged to be positive role models for younger members of our school community.

Our Learning

In Year 5, children continue to deepen their knowledge and understanding across a broad and exciting curriculum.

We focus on developing confident, thoughtful readers, increasingly skilled and independent writers, and secure mathematical understanding, including reasoning and problem-solving.

Children are encouraged to explain their thinking, make connections between subjects and apply their learning in different situations.

You can find more information about the subjects we teach and the learning covered throughout the year on our Curriculum pages.

Supporting Learning at Home

There are lots of simple ways to help your child flourish:

  • Read regularly – Encourage independent reading and discuss characters, themes, vocabulary and ideas.

  • Practise spelling – Help your child learn spelling patterns and apply them accurately in their writing.

  • Keep practising times tables – Encourage quick recall of multiplication and division facts to support more complex mathematics.

  • Encourage writing – Provide opportunities to write stories, reviews, letters or diaries.

  • Build independence – Encourage your child to organise their belongings, manage homework and take responsibility for daily routines.

  • Celebrate effort – Praise perseverance, curiosity and a willingness to tackle new challenges.
