Year 6 - Deer Class
Growing in Confidence, Independence and Leadership!
Welcome to Deer Class! Our class teachers are Mrs Tiernan and Mrs Durrant. Mrs Page and Miss Bridges also work in our class.
Year 6 is a very special year as children reach the final stage of their primary school journey and prepare for the exciting move to secondary school.
In Deer Class, we encourage children to aim high, embrace challenges, develop independence and take pride in everything they achieve. During year 6 we will be going on school camp, taking part in many sporting events and getting ready to move on to secondary school.
Our school values of Aspire, Belong and Care help us create a happy, supportive classroom where everyone feels valued, encouraged and ready to learn.
Life in Deer Class
Every day brings new opportunities to learn, explore and grow!
As the oldest pupils at Winford, our Year 6 children take on additional responsibilities and are encouraged to be positive role models for younger children.
Through pupil leadership opportunities, teamwork and new experiences, children develop confidence, resilience and the skills they need for the next stage of their education.
We also make time to celebrate friendships, achievements and the special memories that make their final year at Winford so important.
Our Learning
In Year 6, children continue to deepen their knowledge and understanding across a broad and exciting curriculum.
We focus on developing confident and thoughtful readers, skilled and independent writers, and secure mathematical understanding, including reasoning and problem-solving.
Children are supported to prepare for their end-of-Key-Stage-2 assessments (SATs) while continuing to enjoy a rich and varied curriculum.
You can find more information about the subjects we teach and the learning covered throughout the year on our Curriculum pages.
Leadership and Responsibility
Year 6 children have opportunities to make a real difference to our school community.
Many take on roles such as Prefects, House Captains and other pupil leadership responsibilities.
Our Mini-Maxi Mates programme is another special part of Year 6. Each child is paired with a Reception pupil, helping our youngest children feel welcome and included. They spend time together at break times and lunchtimes and sometimes share books and reading activities.
These opportunities help children develop kindness, empathy, responsibility and leadership skills.
Preparing for Secondary School
We want every child to leave Winford feeling confident, prepared and excited about their next adventure.
Throughout Year 6, we help children develop greater independence, organisation, resilience and confidence.
We also support children with the transition to secondary school, helping them understand what to expect, ask questions and approach change positively.
Supporting Learning at Home
There are lots of simple ways to help your child flourish:
-
Read regularly – Encourage independent reading and discuss themes, vocabulary, characters and ideas.
-
Practise spelling and grammar – Help your child apply spelling patterns, punctuation and grammar accurately.
-
Keep maths skills sharp – Practise times tables, mental calculations, fractions and problem-solving.
-
Encourage independence – Support your child in organising belongings, managing homework and developing good routines.
-
Talk about secondary school – Encourage questions, discuss feelings and build confidence about the move ahead.
-
Celebrate effort – Praise perseverance, progress and a positive attitude towards challenges.
