Wider Curriculum
Inspiring Curiosity, Creativity and a Love of Learning
At Winford Church of England Primary School, we believe that education is about much more than developing skills in English and mathematics. Our wider curriculum provides children with opportunities to discover new interests, develop their talents, explore the world around them and grow as confident, curious and thoughtful individuals.
Guided by our Christian vision, Together we Flourish, and our values of Aspire, Belong and Care, we aim to provide a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum that enables every child to experience success.
We want children to leave Winford with secure knowledge and skills, a love of learning and a growing understanding of their place in the world.
A Broad and Balanced Curriculum
Our wider curriculum includes:
-
Science – Developing curiosity, scientific knowledge and an understanding of the natural world through investigation and enquiry.
-
History – Exploring significant people, events and periods from the past and understanding how they have shaped our world.
-
Geography – Learning about places, environments, people and the relationships between them, from our local area to the wider world.
-
Religious Education (RE) – Exploring Christianity and other religions and worldviews, developing understanding, respect and thoughtful reflection.
-
Art and Design – Encouraging creativity, imagination and self-expression through a range of techniques and materials.
-
Design and Technology – Developing practical skills, creativity and problem-solving through designing, making and evaluating.
-
Computing – Building digital knowledge, computational thinking and the skills to use technology safely and responsibly.
-
Music – Developing musical understanding, creativity and enjoyment through listening, performing and composing.
-
Physical Education (PE) – Developing physical skills, confidence, teamwork and positive attitudes towards being active.
-
Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) – Supporting children's personal development, relationships, health and understanding of themselves and others.
-
Languages – Developing an interest in other languages and cultures, alongside the knowledge and confidence to communicate in another language.
Each subject has its own important knowledge, vocabulary and skills. Learning is carefully planned so that children build on what they already know as they progress through the school.
Bringing Learning to Life
We believe children learn particularly well when they can make connections between what they are taught and the world around them.
Where appropriate, learning is enriched through practical experiences, educational visits, visitors, performances and opportunities to explore our local community.
Our location in the village of Winford provides opportunities to learn about the local environment, community, heritage and landscape.
We aim to make learning memorable, purposeful and engaging while ensuring that children develop secure knowledge and understanding in each subject.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Outdoor learning is an important part of life at Winford.
Our woodland, gardening areas and wider school grounds provide opportunities for children to explore, investigate and learn through practical experiences.
Through Forest Activities, gardening and other outdoor opportunities, children can develop:
-
Independence and confidence.
-
Problem-solving and practical skills.
-
Teamwork and communication.
-
Resilience and perseverance.
-
An appreciation of nature and the environment.
-
Responsibility for caring for our world.
These experiences enrich classroom learning and provide different opportunities for children to discover their strengths.
Creativity, Culture and Enrichment
We want children to experience a wide range of opportunities that broaden their horizons and help them discover new interests.
Music, art, sport, performances, educational visits and extracurricular activities all contribute to a rich school experience.
Children also have opportunities to take responsibility and contribute to school life through our pupil leadership roles, including School Council, Eco Team, Worship Leaders, Sports Leaders and other responsibilities.
These experiences help children develop confidence, character and a sense of belonging.
Supporting Every Child to Flourish
We believe that every child should be able to access and enjoy the full breadth of our curriculum.
Teachers adapt learning to meet different needs, providing appropriate support and challenge so that children can participate, achieve and make progress.
We recognise that children have different interests, strengths and starting points. Our aim is to help every child develop confidence, experience success and discover what they are capable of achieving.
Developing Knowledge, Skills and Understanding
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to help children remember and build on their learning over time.
Teachers identify the important knowledge, vocabulary and skills that children need to learn within each subject.
Through regular opportunities to revisit and apply their learning, children develop an increasingly secure understanding and make connections between different areas of the curriculum.
Assessment helps teachers identify what children know, understand and can do, as well as where additional teaching or support may be needed.
Preparing Children for the Future
Our wider curriculum helps children develop the knowledge, skills and personal qualities they need for the next stage of their education and for life beyond school.
We encourage children to be curious, ask questions, think critically, appreciate different perspectives and take responsibility for their actions.
Above all, we want children to develop the confidence to explore new opportunities, contribute positively to their communities and continue learning throughout their lives.
