Learning, Growing and Flourishing Together
At Winford Church of England Primary School, we believe that every child deserves an ambitious, engaging and inclusive education that inspires a lifelong love of learning.
Our curriculum is designed to help children develop the knowledge, skills, confidence and character they need to flourish, both during their time at Winford and in the future.
Rooted in our Christian vision, Together we Flourish (John 10:10), our curriculum reflects our three school values:
-
Aspire – We encourage children to aim high, develop curiosity, persevere and take pride in their achievements.
-
Belong – We celebrate individuality, promote inclusion and help children understand their place within our school, local community and wider world.
-
Care – We develop kindness, responsibility, respect and an understanding of how our actions affect others and the environment.
We want children to leave Winford as confident, knowledgeable and compassionate young people, ready for the next stage of their education.
Our Curriculum Intent
Our curriculum is carefully planned to provide a broad, balanced and progressive education, meeting the requirements of the National Curriculum and the Early Years Foundation Stage.
We aim to ensure that all children:
-
Develop secure foundations in reading, writing and mathematics.
-
Acquire essential knowledge and skills across a broad range of subjects.
-
Build on previous learning and make meaningful connections.
-
Develop independence, resilience, creativity and critical thinking.
-
Experience a rich range of opportunities that broaden their horizons.
-
Learn to appreciate different cultures, beliefs and perspectives.
-
Develop an understanding of their responsibilities towards others and the environment.
-
Are appropriately supported and challenged to achieve their potential.
We recognise that children learn in different ways and at different rates. Our curriculum is designed to be accessible and ambitious for all, including children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and those who may face additional barriers to learning.
How Our Curriculum Is Organised
Our curriculum is organised to ensure that learning builds progressively from Reception through to Year 6.
Each subject is carefully sequenced so that children revisit, strengthen and extend important knowledge and skills as they move through the school.
Teachers use assessment to identify what children already know, address misconceptions and plan appropriate next steps.
We place particular importance on:
Strong Foundations
Developing fluent reading, secure mathematical understanding, effective communication and confident writing.
Knowledge and Progression
Ensuring that children learn essential knowledge and can remember, understand and apply it over time.
Vocabulary and Language
Developing rich vocabulary, confident speaking and listening, and the ability to explain ideas clearly.
Inclusion and Adaptation
Providing appropriate support, scaffolding and challenge so that all children can participate and succeed.
Meaningful Experiences
Enriching classroom learning through practical activities, visits, visitors, outdoor learning and wider opportunities.
Early Years Foundation Stage
Our Reception class, Hedgehog Class, provides a nurturing, stimulating environment where children develop curiosity, independence and a love of learning.
Through a balance of purposeful play, adult-guided activities and direct teaching, children develop the foundations they need for future success.
Learning follows the seven areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage, with particular attention to communication and language, personal, social and emotional development, and physical development.
Children have opportunities to explore, investigate, create and learn through both indoor and outdoor experiences.
English and Mathematics
We recognise that strong foundations in English and mathematics are essential for success across the curriculum.
English
We aim to develop confident readers, writers and communicators.
Children are supported to:
-
Develop early reading skills through systematic phonics teaching.
-
Become fluent, enthusiastic and thoughtful readers.
-
Enjoy a wide range of high-quality texts.
-
Develop vocabulary, speaking and listening skills.
-
Write clearly, accurately and creatively for different purposes and audiences.
Reading is at the heart of our curriculum, providing children with the knowledge, imagination and language they need to access learning across all subjects.
Mathematics
Our mathematics curriculum develops fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills.
We want children to develop a secure understanding of number, make connections between mathematical concepts and approach challenges with confidence.
Through carefully sequenced teaching, practical resources, discussion and regular opportunities to apply their knowledge, children develop the skills needed to become confident mathematicians.
A Broad and Balanced Curriculum
Alongside English and mathematics, children study a wide range of subjects, including:
-
Science
-
Religious & World Views (RE)

Religious Education and Our Christian Character
As a Church of England primary school, Religious Education plays an important role in our curriculum.
Our Religion and Worldviews curriculum helps children explore Christianity and other religions and worldviews, developing knowledge, understanding, respect and thoughtful questioning.
Children are encouraged to reflect on important questions about life, belief, identity and belonging.
Our Christian vision and values also influence the wider life of the school, including collective worship, relationships and opportunities for reflection and spiritual development.
Outdoor Learning and Enrichment
We are fortunate to have beautiful outdoor spaces, including our school woodland, gardens and wider village environment.
We believe that learning should extend beyond the classroom and that practical experiences help children develop curiosity, confidence and important life skills.
Our outdoor and enrichment opportunities include:
-
Forest Activities and woodland learning.
-
Gardening, growing and caring for our environment.
-
Cooking and practical life skills.
-
Educational visits and visitors.
-
Sports, music and creative experiences.
-
Opportunities for pupil leadership and responsibility.
These experiences help children connect their learning to the real world, develop teamwork and independence, and discover new interests and talents.
Our village location also provides opportunities to explore the local environment, community and heritage.
Inclusion and Support for All Learners
We are committed to ensuring that our curriculum is accessible, ambitious and meaningful for every child.
Teachers adapt teaching to respond to children's individual needs, providing additional support or challenge where appropriate.
Our Learning Partners work alongside teachers to support access to learning and develop children's independence.
Some children benefit from additional academic, social or emotional interventions, while others may access carefully planned alternative curriculum experiences linked to their individual needs.
We work closely with families and external professionals where necessary to ensure that every child has the opportunity to flourish.

Listening to children's views about their learning.

Monitoring curriculum coverage and progression.
