Keeping safe

It is really important to all of us that we help you learn about keeping yourself safe at school, at home, when you are out and about and any other situation!

Year 6's Visit Lifeskills

Each year we take all of our Year 6 children to visit the Lifeskills Centre in Bristol.  Their Children’s Programme aims to show pupils that you should be taking personal responsibility for your own safety. You will learn how to assess risk and cope with difficult situations by taking part in realistic, interactive activities.  Volunteer Guides take you around their realistic "village" to experience a number of difficult or dangerous situations. You must work together to decide how to overcome each problem and have the opportunity to learn from your mistakes in a safe environment.

Visits from our PCSO (Police Community Support Officer)

Our local PCSOs visit the school on a regular basis to say hello. During the year, they will come and talk to year 6 on 'Crime and Consequences'.  They also benefit from a talk on 'Safety on the Internet'.

Bikeability

Bikeability is today’s cycle training programme. It’s like cycling proficiency, but better! It’s about gaining practical skills and understanding how to cycle on today’s roads. Bikeability gives everyone the skills and confidence for all kinds of cycling. The majority of our Year 6s take part in Bikeability.

Childline

Year 5 and 6 children receive workshops from Childline every other year to help them gain an understanding of what is appropriate, what is not and what to do if they are worried.

Dog Awareness

As a school that is passionate about animal welfare, dogs in particular, we teach children about how to stay safe around dogs and how to respect them.  For more information, please see the page on Dog awareness.

PHSE

Our PHSE curriculum (Jigsaw PHSE) covers all other aspects of safety with all year groups.

As well as the above we talk about many safe practices through activities like cooking, walking in the village when we attend the church for services, daily dog walks in the village with children and more

Feeling safe

We also hope that children feel safe in school as well as learning about safety.  Because we work hard to establish trustworthy and warm relationships with children, we hope that children feel at ease to approach any adult in school if there is something that is making them feel unsafe either at school or at home.
