British Values at Winford
Learning to Respect, Include and Care for One Another
At Winford Church of England Primary School, we want every child to grow into a confident, caring and responsible member of society.
The fundamental British Values help us understand how to live and work together, respect one another and make a positive contribution to our community.
They are an important part of everyday school life and support our Christian vision of Together we Flourish.
Our school values of Aspire, Belong and Care help us put these principles into practice.
What Are the British Values?
There are five important principles that help us understand our rights, responsibilities and how to treat others fairly.
Democracy – Everyone Has a Voice
Democracy means that everyone should have the opportunity to share their views and be involved in decisions.
At Winford, we learn about democracy by:
-
Electing representatives to our School Council and other pupil leadership roles.
-
Sharing our opinions through pupil voice activities and discussions.
-
Voting and making decisions together.
-
Listening respectfully to different viewpoints.
-
Understanding that everyone's voice matters, even when we disagree.
At Winford, we learn that our opinions matter and that listening to others is just as important as being heard.
The Rule of Law – Rules Help Keep Us Safe
Rules and laws help protect people, keep us safe and ensure that everyone is treated fairly.
At Winford, we learn about the rule of law by:
-
Following our school rules: Ready, Respectful, Safe.
-
Understanding why rules are important in school and in the wider community.
-
Learning about rights, responsibilities and consequences.
-
Taking part in visits and discussions with our local police.
-
Learning how laws help protect people and keep communities safe.
At Winford, we understand that rules help us learn, play and live together safely.
Individual Liberty – Being Ourselves and Making Choices
Individual liberty means having the freedom to make choices, express ourselves and develop our own interests, while respecting the rights of others.
At Winford, we encourage individual liberty by:
-
Helping children make informed and responsible choices.
-
Encouraging independence, confidence and self-expression.
-
Providing opportunities to explore different interests and talents.
-
Teaching children about their rights and responsibilities.
-
Helping children understand how to stay safe, including when making choices online.
At Winford, we celebrate what makes each of us unique and encourage everyone to be themselves.
Mutual Respect – Treating Everyone with Kindness
Mutual respect means treating others with kindness, fairness and consideration, even when we have different opinions or experiences.
At Winford, we develop mutual respect by:
-
Living out our school values of Belong and Care.
-
Building positive friendships and relationships.
-
Learning to listen, cooperate and resolve disagreements respectfully.
-
Celebrating the achievements and contributions of others.
-
Learning about kindness, empathy and respect through Jigsaw PSHE, collective worship and everyday school life.
At Winford, we believe everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, kindness and respect.
Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs – Celebrating Our Differences
We believe that everyone should feel welcome, valued and included, whatever their religion, beliefs or background.
At Winford, we develop understanding and respect by:
-
Learning about different religions and worldviews through our Religious Education curriculum.
-
Exploring different cultures, traditions and celebrations.
-
Encouraging children to ask thoughtful questions and develop understanding.
-
Challenging stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination.
-
Helping children appreciate both the similarities and differences between people.
As a Church of England school, our Christian vision encourages us to show love, compassion and respect to everyone.
At Winford, we celebrate diversity and understand that our differences make our community richer.
British Values in Everyday School Life
British Values are not just something we learn about in lessons. They are part of how we live and work together every day.
We explore them through:
-
Collective worship and assemblies – Reflecting on values, fairness, responsibility, respect and important events.
-
Jigsaw PSHE – Learning about relationships, rights, responsibilities and making safe choices.
-
Religious Education – Developing understanding of different faiths, beliefs and worldviews.
-
Pupil leadership – Giving children opportunities to contribute to decisions and make a difference.
-
Our behaviour curriculum – Learning to be Ready, Respectful and Safe through our Learning Gems.
-
School events and celebrations – Bringing our community together and recognising the importance of belonging.
-
Everyday relationships – Showing kindness, listening to one another and making sure everyone feels included.
British Values and Our School Values
Our three school values help us bring British Values to life.
Aspire – We develop the confidence to express our opinions, make responsible choices and become active members of society.
Belong – We celebrate diversity, value everyone's voice and make sure all children feel included.
Care – We treat others with kindness, respect their rights and take responsibility for our actions.
Together, these values help us create a school where everyone is respected, everyone has a voice and everyone has the opportunity to flourish.
Together we Flourish
Learning to live together with respect, kindness and understanding.
