Curriculum Enrichment
Bringing Learning to Life, Broadening Horizons and Creating Lasting Memories
At Winford Church of England Primary School, we believe that some of the most memorable learning experiences happen beyond the classroom.
Our curriculum enrichment opportunities help children discover new interests, develop confidence, build friendships and experience the world around them.
Through educational visits, residential trips, outdoor learning and practical experiences, we aim to bring learning to life and provide opportunities that children will remember long after they leave Winford.
Our Christian vision, Together we Flourish, and our school values of Aspire, Belong and Care underpin our approach. We encourage children to embrace new challenges, develop a sense of belonging and show care for one another and the world around them.
Educational Visits and Cultural Experiences
Making Learning Meaningful and Memorable
We love using school trips to enhance children's learning and bring classroom topics to life.
Where possible, educational visits are carefully chosen to link directly to what children are studying, helping them make connections between their learning and the wider world.
These experiences might include visits to museums, historical sites, places of worship, theatres, outdoor environments or other locations that support the curriculum.
School trips provide opportunities for children to:
-
Experience learning first-hand.
-
Explore new places and environments.
-
Make connections with classroom learning.
-
Develop curiosity and ask questions.
-
Build confidence and independence.
-
Learn about their local community and the wider world.
-
Create shared memories with their classmates.
We also recognise the value of cultural experiences beyond specific curriculum topics. Our annual whole-school visit to the theatre to enjoy the Christmas pantomime is one such opportunity, allowing children to experience the excitement of live theatre and share a special occasion together.
Residential Visits
Growing in Confidence, Independence and Resilience
Our residential visits are an important part of the opportunities we offer children at Winford.
Spending time away from home provides valuable experiences that help children develop independence, confidence, friendships and resilience.
We offer three residential experiences during children's time at Winford.
Year 3 – Overnight Stay at School
This year, we are introducing an overnight stay at school for our Year 3 children. This will be a fun introduction to spending a night away from home, helping children build confidence and independence in the familiar surroundings of Winford.
Year 5 – Residential Camp
Our Year 5 children enjoy a three-day, two-night residential camp, taking part in a range of exciting activities. It is a wonderful opportunity to develop teamwork, independence and confidence while making special memories with friends.
Year 6 – Residential Camp
In Year 6, children take part in a three-day, two-night residential camp, enjoying a variety of activities and new challenges. This is a fantastic opportunity to strengthen friendships, develop resilience and celebrate their final year at Winford.
Planning and Paying for Residential Visits
Residential visits are chargeable activities.
We provide parents and carers with information well in advance, including details of the activities, arrangements and costs, to allow families time to plan and spread payments.
Our Charging and Remissions Policy explains the school's approach to charges and financial assistance.
If families have concerns about the cost of a residential visit, we encourage them to contact the school confidentially to discuss what support may be available.
Outdoor Learning and Forest Activities
Learning, Exploring and Flourishing Outdoors
We are fortunate to have our own woodland area within the school grounds.
This wonderful natural environment provides opportunities for children to learn, explore and develop skills beyond the classroom.
Outdoor learning is an important part of our curriculum and wider provision, with planned forest activities across the school.
Children have opportunities to:
-
Explore the natural environment.
-
Learn about plants, animals and habitats.
-
Develop teamwork and communication skills.
-
Build confidence and independence.
-
Solve practical problems.
-
Develop resilience and perseverance.
-
Take appropriate risks in a supported environment.
-
Learn how to care for the natural world.
Outdoor learning also supports children's physical and emotional wellbeing, providing opportunities to connect with nature, enjoy fresh air and experience learning in different ways.
What Children Need for Outdoor Learning

Children may be asked to bring suitable outdoor clothing, including wellington boots and waterproof coats, for forest activities and other outdoor learning.
Class teachers will share information about any additional clothing or equipment needed.
We aim to make use of our outdoor spaces throughout the year, so suitable clothing helps children enjoy these experiences comfortably.
Gardening and Growing
Our school gardening area provides opportunities for children to develop practical skills and learn about the natural world.
Through planting, growing and caring for our garden, children can explore important aspects of Science, Mathematics and environmental education.
Gardening also helps children develop:
-
Responsibility and independence.
-
Patience and perseverance.
-
Teamwork and cooperation.
-
An understanding of where food comes from.
-
Care for living things and the environment.
Our gardening activities include opportunities during lunchtimes and as part of our additional curriculum provision for children who benefit from practical, hands-on learning.
We want children to experience the satisfaction of growing, nurturing and caring for something over time.
Cooking and Practical Life Skills
Cooking provides opportunities for children to develop important life skills while applying learning from across the curriculum.
Through practical cooking activities, children can develop skills in:
-
Measuring and weighing ingredients.
-
Following instructions and sequences.
-
Understanding food preparation and hygiene.
-
Working cooperatively with others.
-
Developing independence.
-
Exploring healthy eating.
-
Trying new foods and flavours.
Cooking is also part of our additional practical learning provision, helping children develop confidence, communication and independence through meaningful activities.
These experiences demonstrate that learning can take many different forms.
Creative and Enrichment Activities
We recognise the importance of providing opportunities for children to explore their interests, express themselves and develop talents beyond traditional academic subjects.
Creative activities, music, performances, practical projects and other enrichment experiences all contribute to children's personal development.
They provide opportunities to develop imagination, collaboration, problem-solving and confidence.
We want children to discover new interests, recognise their strengths and experience the satisfaction of creating and achieving something.
Learning Through Our Local Community
We value opportunities for children to learn about and engage with the community around them.
Our village location, local environment and connections with the wider Bristol and North Somerset area provide valuable opportunities for learning.
Where appropriate, we use local places, people and experiences to help children develop a sense of belonging and understand the world beyond school.
These experiences also encourage children to recognise their role as active, responsible members of their community.
Enrichment for Every Child
We believe that every child should have opportunities to enjoy new experiences, develop their interests and discover what they are capable of achieving.
We recognise that children have different strengths, interests and needs.
Our enrichment offer therefore includes a variety of experiences, from adventurous outdoor activities to creative, practical and cultural opportunities.
Staff plan activities carefully and consider the support or adaptations needed to help children participate safely and successfully.
We want every child to feel included, valued and able to take part in the wider life of the school.
Why Curriculum Enrichment Matters
Enrichment is not simply an addition to classroom learning. It is an important part of helping children develop as individuals.
Through these experiences, children have opportunities to:
-
Aspire – Discover new interests, challenge themselves and develop confidence.
-
Belong – Build friendships, work together and create shared memories.
-
Care – Develop respect for others, their community and the natural environment.
We want children to leave Winford with more than academic knowledge. We want them to have experienced adventure, creativity, teamwork, challenge and the joy of discovering something new.
