Early Years Foundation Stage

Little Learners, Big Adventures!

At Winford Church of England Primary School, we believe that the early years are a very special time in a child's education.

Our Reception children begin their school journey in Hedgehog Class, where we provide a happy, nurturing and stimulating environment in which every child feels safe, valued and excited to learn.

Our Christian vision, Together we Flourish, and our school values of Aspire, Belong and Care underpin everything we do.

We recognise that every child is unique and develops at their own pace. Our aim is to help children grow in confidence, develop independence, build positive relationships and discover a lifelong love of learning.

Our Approach to Early Years Learning

We believe that young children learn best through a combination of purposeful play, exploration, practical experiences and carefully planned adult-led activities.

Our Early Years curriculum follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework and is designed to provide children with strong foundations for future learning.

We provide opportunities for children to:

  • Explore and investigate – Developing curiosity about the world around them.

  • Play and discover – Learning through imaginative, creative and practical experiences.

  • Communicate and collaborate – Building language skills, friendships and positive relationships.

  • Develop independence – Learning to make choices, solve problems and take responsibility.

  • Be active and adventurous – Developing physical skills through movement, play and outdoor learning.

  • Grow in confidence – Celebrating achievements, developing resilience and learning from mistakes.

Our staff carefully observe children's interests, development and learning to plan experiences that both support and challenge them.

The Seven Areas of Learning and Development

The EYFS curriculum is organised into seven areas of learning and development.

The Three Prime Areas

These areas are particularly important for building the foundations for all future learning.

Communication and Language

Children develop their speaking, listening and understanding through stories, conversations, songs, rhymes, imaginative play and everyday interactions.

We encourage children to express their ideas, ask questions, develop vocabulary and become confident communicators.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Children learn to understand their feelings, develop friendships, manage emotions and become increasingly independent.

We help children build confidence, develop a positive sense of self and learn how to care for themselves and others.

Physical Development

Children develop their gross and fine motor skills through movement, outdoor play, climbing, balancing, drawing, painting and practical activities.

We also support children in developing healthy habits and independence in everyday routines.

The Four Specific Areas

These areas build on the prime areas and provide opportunities to develop important knowledge and skills.

Literacy

Children develop a love of books, stories and reading.

Through daily phonics teaching, storytelling, shared reading and early writing experiences, children begin to recognise letters and sounds, blend words and develop confidence as early readers and writers.

Mathematics

Children develop a secure understanding of numbers, patterns, shapes and mathematical relationships.

Through games, practical activities and everyday experiences, they learn to count, compare quantities, explore number composition and solve simple problems.

Understanding the World

Children explore the natural world, their community, the past and present, and the similarities and differences between people and places.

Our outdoor environment provides wonderful opportunities to observe seasonal changes, investigate nature and develop curiosity about the world.

Expressive Arts and Design

Children develop their imagination and creativity through art, music, movement, role play, construction and design.

We encourage children to explore materials, express their ideas and enjoy creating in different ways.

Learning Through Play

Play is an essential part of learning in Reception.

Through play, children develop language, creativity, problem-solving, independence and social skills.

Our carefully planned learning environment encourages children to explore, investigate and make discoveries for themselves.

Adults support children's learning by joining in with play, introducing new vocabulary, asking thoughtful questions and helping children extend their ideas.

Alongside child-initiated learning, children also take part in structured teaching sessions that develop important early reading, writing and mathematical skills.

Outdoor Learning

We are fortunate to have wonderful outdoor spaces at Winford, providing opportunities for children to learn beyond the classroom.

Outdoor learning is an important part of our EYFS provision.

Children enjoy opportunities to:

  • Explore the natural environment and observe seasonal changes.

  • Develop physical confidence through climbing, balancing and movement.

  • Investigate water, sand and other materials.

  • Build, create and solve problems together.

  • Develop imagination through role play and creative activities.

  • Learn about plants, wildlife and caring for the environment.

These experiences help children develop confidence, curiosity, resilience and a connection with the natural world.

Developing Independence and Positive Relationships

Starting school is an important milestone, and we work closely with families to help children feel happy, secure and confident.

We encourage children to become increasingly independent by learning to manage their belongings, make choices, follow routines and take responsibility for themselves.

Developing friendships and positive relationships is equally important.

Our Year 6 Mini-Maxi Mates programme helps Reception children feel part of the wider school community. Each Reception child is paired with an older pupil who offers friendship and support, particularly during playtimes and lunchtimes.

This is a wonderful example of our school values of Belong and Care in action.

Understanding Your Child's Progress

Every child develops at their own pace, and our staff take time to get to know each child's strengths, interests and next steps.

We assess children's learning through observation, interactions, conversations and their everyday experiences.

At the end of Reception, children's development is assessed against the Early Learning Goals, which describe the knowledge, skills and understanding children are expected to demonstrate by the end of the EYFS.

We use this information to celebrate children's progress and support a positive transition into Year 1.

Working Together with Families

We believe that parents and carers are children's first and most important educators.

We value strong relationships between home and school and encourage families to share information about their children's interests, achievements and experiences.

There are lots of simple ways to support learning at home:

  • Share books every day – Enjoy stories, talk about pictures and develop a love of reading.

  • Talk and listen – Encourage conversations, questions and storytelling.

  • Explore numbers – Count everyday objects, play number games and notice shapes and patterns.

  • Encourage independence – Practise getting dressed, managing belongings and following simple routines.

  • Play together – Enjoy imaginative play, construction, outdoor activities and creative experiences.

  • Celebrate effort – Praise curiosity, perseverance and trying something new.

Our ClassDojo updates and termly class newsletters help families stay informed about learning and provide ideas for supporting children at home.
