PSHE & RSE
Developing Healthy Relationships, Confidence and Life Skills
At Winford Church of England Primary School, we believe that Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) is an essential part of helping children grow into happy, healthy, confident and responsible individuals.
Our curriculum supports children in understanding themselves, developing positive relationships, managing their emotions and making informed choices. It helps prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and challenges they will encounter as they grow.
Our Christian vision, Together we Flourish, and our school values of Aspire, Belong and Care are at the heart of our approach. We want every child to feel valued, included and safe, developing the knowledge and skills needed to flourish both in school and beyond.
Our PSHE and RHSE Curriculum
At Winford, we use the Jigsaw PSHE programme to support our values-led approach to personal development.
Jigsaw provides a comprehensive, progressive programme of learning from Reception to Year 6. It brings together PSHE, emotional literacy, social skills, mindfulness, Relationships Education, Health Education and age-appropriate Sex Education.
Through PSHE and RHSE, children learn to:
-
Recognise, understand and manage their emotions.
-
Develop positive friendships and healthy relationships.
-
Respect themselves and others, including people with different backgrounds and experiences.
-
Understand how to keep themselves safe, both online and offline.
-
Make healthy choices and look after their physical and mental wellbeing.
-
Develop confidence, resilience and a positive sense of self.
-
Understand their rights, responsibilities and the importance of fairness.
-
Recognise changes as they grow and develop.
-
Know how and when to seek help from trusted adults.
We aim to provide a safe, supportive environment where children can ask questions, explore ideas and develop the confidence to make positive choices.
The Six Jigsaw Themes
Our Jigsaw curriculum is organised into six themes, known as Jigsaw Puzzles. These are revisited each year, allowing children to build progressively on their previous learning.
1. Being Me in My World
Understanding ourselves and our place in the community
Children explore their identity, sense of belonging and responsibilities within their class, school and wider community.
They learn about rights and responsibilities, making positive choices, understanding consequences and helping everyone feel included.
This theme supports our school value of Belong, encouraging children to recognise that everyone has an important part to play in our school community.
2. Celebrating Difference
Recognising and respecting what makes us unique
Children learn to appreciate similarities and differences between people, families and communities.
They explore respect, inclusion, stereotypes, bullying and how to respond when someone is treated unfairly.
Children are encouraged to celebrate individuality and understand that everyone deserves kindness, dignity and respect.
3. Dreams and Goals
Developing aspirations, resilience and confidence
Children explore their hopes and ambitions, learning how to set goals, overcome challenges and recognise their achievements.
They develop perseverance, teamwork and problem-solving skills, understanding that mistakes and setbacks are part of learning.
This theme reflects our school value of Aspire, encouraging children to believe in themselves and work towards their goals.
4. Healthy Me
Looking after our physical and emotional wellbeing
Children learn about healthy lifestyles, physical health, mental wellbeing and keeping themselves safe.
Their learning includes:
-
Healthy eating, exercise and sleep.
-
Understanding and managing emotions.
-
Recognising stress and developing coping strategies.
-
Personal hygiene and looking after their bodies.
-
Making safe choices and recognising risks.
-
Knowing when and how to ask for help.
Children develop an understanding that looking after their wellbeing involves both physical and emotional health.
5. Relationships
Building positive, respectful and healthy relationships
Children explore friendships, families and the importance of healthy relationships.
They learn about:
-
Different types of families and relationships.
-
Friendship, kindness, trust and respect.
-
Recognising healthy and unhealthy behaviours.
-
Personal boundaries and consent in age-appropriate contexts.
-
Managing disagreements and resolving conflict.
-
Staying safe in online relationships.

Seeking help when relationships cause worry or distress.
We encourage children to recognise the importance of treating others with care and respect while understanding their right to feel safe.
6. Changing Me
Understanding Growing Up and Managing Change
Children learn about the changes they experience as they grow, including physical, emotional and social development.
Learning is carefully matched to children's ages and stages of development.
This includes:
-
Recognising how they have grown and changed.
-
Understanding emotions associated with change.
-
Learning about their bodies using appropriate scientific vocabulary.

Understanding puberty and the changes it brings.

Developing a positive and respectful understanding of themselves and others.

Preparing for transitions, including moving to secondary school.
The Changing Me theme includes aspects of Relationships, Health and Sex Education, with content introduced progressively and sensitively.
PSHE in Reception
In Reception, PSHE is closely connected to the Early Years Foundation Stage, particularly Personal, Social and Emotional Development.
Children learn to recognise their feelings, develop friendships, share, take turns and begin to manage their emotions.
Through stories, play, discussion and practical experiences, they develop confidence, independence and a sense of belonging.
The Jigsaw themes provide opportunities to explore relationships, healthy habits, differences, feelings and change in ways that are appropriate for young children.
PSHE in Key Stage 1
In Years 1 and 2, children develop their understanding of themselves and others.
They learn about friendship, kindness, managing feelings, healthy habits and staying safe.
Children begin to recognise how their choices affect others and develop strategies for resolving disagreements and asking for help.
They also explore similarities and differences between people and families, learning the importance of respect and inclusion.
PSHE in Key Stage 2
In Years 3 to 6, children explore increasingly complex aspects of relationships, wellbeing, personal responsibility and growing up.
They develop a deeper understanding of:
-
Emotional wellbeing and mental health.
-
Healthy and unhealthy relationships.
-
Personal boundaries, privacy and consent.
-
Online safety and digital relationships.
-
Peer pressure and making informed choices.
-
Puberty and physical development.
-
Respect, equality and diversity.
-
Managing change and preparing for secondary school.
Children are encouraged to think critically, discuss different situations and develop the confidence to make safe and responsible decisions.
Relationships, Health and Sex Education (RHSE)
Supporting Children to Understand Relationships, Health and Growing Up
Relationships and Health Education are important and compulsory elements of the primary curriculum.
At Winford, these are taught through our Jigsaw programme and supported by our wider approach to safeguarding, wellbeing and personal development.
Our RHSE teaching is designed to be:
-
Age-appropriate and sensitive to children's developmental stages.
-
Inclusive and respectful of different families and backgrounds.
-
Based on accurate information and appropriate vocabulary.
-
Delivered in a safe and supportive environment.
-
Responsive to children's questions and individual needs.
-
Consistent with our Christian vision and values.
Children learn about healthy relationships, respect, personal safety, physical health and the changes associated with growing up.
Age-appropriate Sex Education is also included within our wider programme, helping children develop an understanding of human development.
We recognise the importance of working in partnership with parents and carers. Information about the content taught in each year group, including compulsory elements and parental rights relating to Sex Education, is provided in our RHSE documents below.
Emotional Wellbeing and Self-Regulation
PSHE is closely connected to our wider approach to supporting children's emotional wellbeing.
Alongside Jigsaw, we use the Zones of Regulation to help children recognise and understand their feelings and develop strategies to manage them.
Children are encouraged to identify how they are feeling, understand what may be affecting their emotions and choose helpful ways to regulate themselves.
Our approach is rooted in positive relationships, emotional safety and understanding children's individual needs.
We also provide additional support where needed through nurture approaches, our calm spaces, The Snug and The Ark, and access to support from the Mental Health Support Team.
These approaches complement our PSHE curriculum and help children put their learning into practice throughout the school day.
Keeping Children Safe
Learning how to recognise risks, make safe choices and ask for help is an important part of PSHE at Winford.
Children are taught about personal safety, online safety, trusted adults and recognising situations that may make them feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
This learning is reinforced through our wider safeguarding curriculum, assemblies, visits and age-appropriate activities.
We want every child to know that their worries will be listened to and that there are trusted adults in school who can help them.
Our school rules, Ready, Respectful, Safe, provide a consistent foundation for helping children understand positive behaviour and respectful relationships.
Respect, Equality and Diversity
We want Winford to be a school where every child feels a strong sense of belonging.
Through Jigsaw, children learn about different families, identities, cultures and experiences. They are encouraged to challenge stereotypes, recognise unfairness and understand the importance of treating everyone with dignity.
This learning supports our commitment to equality, inclusion and the British Values of mutual respect and tolerance.
Our school value of Care encourages children to show kindness, empathy and consideration towards others, including those whose experiences or beliefs may differ from their own.
Helping Children Know More and Remember More
Our PSHE curriculum is carefully sequenced so that children revisit important themes and develop deeper understanding as they progress through school.
Jigsaw provides a consistent structure, vocabulary and approach to learning.
Teachers use stories, discussion, reflection, practical activities and age-appropriate scenarios to help children explore important ideas and apply their learning.
Children are encouraged to make connections between their PSHE lessons and their everyday experiences, including friendships, behaviour, online activity and emotional wellbeing.
We want children to develop knowledge and skills that they can use confidently throughout their lives.
Supporting Every Learner
We believe that every child should be able to access and benefit from PSHE and RHSE.
Teachers adapt learning to meet individual needs, taking account of children's developmental stages, experiences and additional needs.
This may include:
-
Visual resources and clear explanations.
-
Carefully introduced vocabulary.
-
Small-group or individual support.
-
Opportunities to explore ideas through stories and practical activities.
-
Sensitive handling of personal or potentially challenging topics.
-
Additional opportunities to revisit and consolidate learning.
We recognise that some children may need additional support when learning about emotions, relationships, personal safety or physical changes.
Our aim is to ensure that all children feel safe, included and confident in their learning.
Working in Partnership with Parents and Carers
We recognise that parents and carers play an essential role in helping children develop healthy relationships, positive values and an understanding of growing up.
We aim to provide clear information about what children learn in PSHE and RHSE so that families can support and continue these conversations at home.
Parents can support learning by:
-
Talking about feelings – Helping children recognise and name their emotions.
-
Encouraging positive friendships – Discussing kindness, respect and resolving disagreements.
-
Promoting healthy habits – Supporting routines around sleep, exercise, food and screen time.
-
Talking about safety – Discussing trusted adults, personal boundaries and online safety.
-
Celebrating differences – Encouraging respect for different families, cultures and experiences.
-
Keeping conversations open – Answering questions about growing up in an honest, age-appropriate way.
Our Jigsaw parent information and RHSE guidance provide further details about the programme and the content taught.
